HOW WOLVES CHANGED RIVERS
bismillah,
This all started when wolves were reintroduced in the yellow stone national park in the year 1995.
Now we all know that wolves kill various species of animals, but perhaps we do not know that they give life to many others.
Before the wolves turned up, they had been absent for 70 years. The number of deer, because there was nothing to hunt them, had built up and built up in the Yellowstone park despite the efforts of the humans to control them (E.g. by hunting them). They'd managed to graze the vegetation there to almost nothing,
But when the wolves arrived, even though they were few in numbers, started to have the most remarkable effects.
First of course, they killed some of the deer, but the amazing thing is that they changed the behaviour of the deer (how?). The deer started avoiding certain parts of the park- the places were they could be easily trapped, particularly the valley and the gorges.
And when that happened, those places started regenerating almost immediately. In some areas, the height of the trees quintupled in just six years, Bare valleys quickly became forests of willow and aspen and cottonwood. As soon as that happened, birds started moving in, the number of songbirds and migratory birds quickly increased.
The number of beavers started increasing because beavers like to the eat trees. And beavers, like wolves, are ecosystem engineers, they build dams which provide home to beavers as well otters and muskrats and fish and amphibians and ducks.
(Above, Beaver with its dam)
The wolves killed coyotes, and as a result of that the number of rabbits and mice began to rise. which meant more eagles, hawks, weasels, badgers and foxes. The bald eagles and ravens came down to feed on the carrion wolves left.
(Above, Coyote)Bears fed on it too, and their population began to rise, partly also because there were more berries in the regenerating plants, and the bears helped the deer population stay stable by killing some of the calves of the deer.
But this is the most interesting part. The Wolves changed the behaviour of the rivers. there was less erosion, the banks became stable, the channels narrowed, more pools formed, more rifle sections formed, all of which were great habitats for wildlife. The rivers changed in response to the wolves, and the reason was the regenerating forests stabilizing the banks which collapsed so often.
So the wolves, small in number, did not just change the ecosystem of the yellow stone national park, but also its physical geography.
In the stories and the movies, people are told that wolves are bad, scary, blood thirsty, and people, believe them, BELIEVE THEM! That is so ridiculous, these wolves, who transformed a barren land into a vast jungle, is the hero of this real life story.
People don't understand but wolves DO NOT attack people for no reason, and also, if you say wolves are cruel, yes they might be, but at least they hunt when they are hungry, not like us, who do it for what you call it? yes, fun! thrill! Money!
Do you give it a thought why these wolves went absent in the first place? Yes, they were hunted. I think it must be banned, wolves are so useful to us, they give us so many things, and we give them a blackout.
Many people are led to believe that wolves are not in danger, but guys, how is this possible? with us human beings in this world, is this ACTUALLY possible?
We don't even own this world, yes, we don't own this world. Because Allah sent us here temporarily, and we will go to him, we will own heaven or hell .We are guests and these animals own this world, yes they own this world, and we are trying to control this world, trying to own this world. We are trying to take this world from them.
Guys we are just like travellers, this world is like a rest station, or you can say we are like guests, guests don't try to control their hosts do they?
We have to STOP thinking that wolves are bad, and the above story is exactly the reason.
