 I think cockatiels are the greatest pet bird ever, although they might not be as common as budgies, but everything that's common is not always the better. 

let me tell you the difference between a cockatiel and a budgie. 

Social difference

Budgies don't like being touched, but like sitting on perches. While cockatiels like being touched and cuddled, they also like sitting on perches. A budgie will become depressed if left alone, while a cockatiel will only need some time of yours, and can be left alone for a while. So cockatiels are an ideal choice for busy people. 

Vocal difference

A cockatiel is (a lot) calmer than a budgie, while a budgie is always twittering, other than at night(when they sleep) they don't chirp at night only. If you want to know about the capacity of their talking, I might say budgies might be better at that, they have a higher vocabulary than cockatails, but a cockatiel's voice is more clearer than a budgie's, so when a cockatiel starts talking, it's always clear! 

Cleanliness

I'll tell you about this from my experiences, I say, a budgie poos more than a cockatiel! See, once I was in my relative's home. I saw that every day their dirt tray had to be washed. While my cocktails, don't dirty their tray much. So I don't have to wash their tray every day, so again I say, cockatiels are better (for busy people I mean). 

Who is more cute? 

Well, I might say. Cockatiels are cuter than budgies, but budgies are more colourful than cockatiels. Like blue, green, white and yellow. While cockatiels have yellow grey and white colours, with a beautiful crown and red cheeks, yellow cocktails are more beautiful and fancy, while budgies are small and simple (cute too). 

But friends, I might like to add that both birds are better. But cockatiels are an ideal choice for busy people, while budgies need time. 

Life span and food

Well, cockatiels (definitely) have a longer life span, 10 to 15 years, and if taken care of properly, can live up to 20 years. While buddies live shorter.  there's not really any food difference, they both eat seeds, fruits and vegetables, but from my experiences, I saw that cockatails love to eat bread and coriander. 

Friendly difference

They are both quite friendly, but cockatiels love being cuddled, stroked and touched. Because my female cockatiel Montana, loves being stroked behind her crown and on the upper side of her neck, and she also likes being cuddled, like I sometimes lay down with her and she sometimes sleeps (ma sha Allah) a cockatiel might gain trust faster then budgie on it's caretaker.

 

So seeing these results, you can decide by yourself who is better, but friends, keep in mind that you'll need to give time, love and care to both of these birds, toys and necessary treatment are also a must. 

I have got a pair of Lutino cockatiels, the female is a sort of bird any owner could wish for, while ibro (male) hmm, he's good too, sort of, they are both great, but Montana is better. 

I know many people who have kept budgies as a pet, but I don't know anybody who has a pet bird other than budgies, friends, I want to tell you that you can buy pet birds other than budgies.
